Online Applications Open | Aubrey Burton/Reg Ford Scholarship | Aug 19

CUPE BC is now accepting applications online for the Aubrey Burton/Reg Ford Scholarship.   Scholarships are awarded on both a competitive and lottery basis based on the following criteria:

  1. Parent, Guardian or Spouse of Applicant, or the Applicant her/himself must be a member in good standing of a CUPE Local affiliated to CUPE BC at the time of application.
  2. Applicant must have completed Grade 12 in the current or previous calendar year.
  3. Applicant must be entering first year of a recognized public postsecondary institution in BC. A copy of the acceptance letter from the admitting institution must be supplied.
  4. Applicant must complete an online application form supported by copies of the Senior Secondary Statement Transcript and letter(s) of reference from school principal or counsellor.

Asian-Canadian Labour Alliance | What Rights Do I Have? Workshop | Jun 25

In collaboration with SFU’s David Lam Centre and Labour Studies Program, the ACLA  is hosting a workshop for Asian newcomers to Canada and Asian Canadians who are new to working in either unionized or non-unionized workplaces, with speakers including Eric Seto of UFCW 247 and Julie Diesta of the Vancouver Committee for Domestic Workers’ and Caregivers’ Rights.

Community social services bargaining resumes

Your bargaining committee has been negotiating your new community social services sectoral collective agreement representing more than 17,000 workers in your sector from ten unions including BCGEU, CUPE, HEU, HSA, LiUNA 1611, CSWU, CLAC, USW 1-417, UFCW and BCNU.  Your committee is negotiating agreements for workers in Community Living Services, General Services and Indigenous Services sub-sectors.  A collective agreement outlines the terms and conditions of your employment including wages, benefits, and working conditions, including your rights as a union member.

Workers in community social services have gone above and beyond during the pandemic – providing quality child care, and support for people with disabilities, new Canadians, youths at risk, Indigenous families, individuals facing family violence and many others.

That’s why we are back at the table and will continue to discuss the priorities that you identified to help address systemic issues in the community social services sector so that you can do your job safely and support your community.

As we continue the bargaining process next week, you can expect to hear from us with key updates and what will come next in the process.

Local 1936 would like to recognize all those that have been injured, suffer or die while they have been at work. Please take a moment to watch the video (link below) and a minute of silence to reflect on those that have been affected and how you can stay safe while you work.

Every year in Canada, hundreds of workers die or suffer serious injuries and illnesses because of their work. One death is one too many. Each statistic represents a face, a life lived, loved, lost or forever altered. These tragedies have a devastating effect on not only workers, but their families, and communities as well. Each year on April 28th our National Day of Mourning, we lower our flags to half-mast and pause to reflect on, and honour, the memory of those who have died or suffered injury or illness due to a work-related tragedy. We also take this day to renew our commitment to do more to improve workplace health and safety for everyone so we can prevent further injuries, illnesses and deaths. Please join us in observing a minute of silence.
